The Friendship Song

The "Friendship Song" is sung in the  Mi'kmaq community, but it is sung by many other First Nations communities across Canada as well.  There is no direct translations as the lyrics are vocables.  This song is not sung for specific ceremonies thus has no particular protocol that surrounds it, though it is often used as a round dance.  This is one of the reasons it's perfect for using it in school - more creative freedom is appropriate than some First Nations songs that are linked with specific ceremonies and/or protocol.

Kepmite'tmnej
The Mi'kmaq Honour Song

Kepmite'tmnej, Mi'kmaw Honour Song, was received in the sweatlodge by George Paul in the 1980s. A singer-songwriter from the Metepenagiag First Nation (Red Bank), New Brunswick, George has been involved with the Traditional Movement in reviving Mi'kmaw songs, chants, and ceremonies for over thirty years. This song features a combination of meaningful text in Mi'kmaq and vocables.
